Floor heating changes a concrete-cutting enquiry even when the proposed cut is small. First establish whether heating is in the concrete, in a topping or just beneath the finish. If its location is unknown, the removal boundary is not ready to approve.

Find the system records before marking a cut

Ask for installation photographs, layout drawings, product information and the contact for the heating installer. A thermostat location does not map the cable or pipe route. Identify which rooms share the system and whether it must remain operational after the alteration.

Electric cable and water-based tubing need different trade input. Manufacturer guidance for the actual system matters. For example, Warmup states that its heating cable must not be cut; that does not establish a safe cut location in your floor or a repair method for another manufacturer's product.

Decide whether the heating stays or changes

Have the responsible trade assess the proposed opening and explain whether the system can be retained, needs alteration or must be replaced in the affected area. Record the decision before demolition is priced as a simple slab removal. A plan to abandon a zone still needs proper isolation and a clear boundary to the system that stays.

Concrete scanning may contribute information, but its limitations must be understood for the particular assembly. Do not treat a lack of visible marks as proof that no heating component is present. No homeowner should open the floor to find the route for a quotation.

Agree the test and reinstatement handover

Ask the heating trade to record the appropriate pre-work condition and post-work checks. Specify who investigates a changed reading or exposed component and who repairs the floor around it. Cutting and debris removal do not include recommissioning the heating by assumption.

If records are missing, describe the uncertainty in the enquiry. The next useful step may be an assessment, not a booked cut. This avoids offering a retention promise before anyone has established where the system actually runs.
