Scope and Handover
Can you stay at home during an interior strip-out?
- scope decisions
- project preparation
Staying in the house is a project-specific decision. The key question is whether the household can use essential facilities and a separate, workable route while the agreed demolition area is unavailable.
Test a normal day against the proposed work area
Walk through how occupants would enter, sleep, prepare food and use a bathroom while the work zone is closed. Include people who need assistance, children and pets. A retained room is not useful if reaching it requires passing through the active removal area.
List interruptions the responsible trades expect and which facilities they affect. Removing the only kitchen or bathroom may change the answer even when the physical demolition area is small. Do not rely on an informal assurance that a connection can be used between work periods.
Review separation with the project team
Ask the contractor how the occupied area, work area and debris route will be arranged for this scope. Protection and dust controls are not a guarantee that every occupant can remain. The material assessment, work method and individual household needs all belong in the discussion.
Agree where personal contents will be stored and keep occupants out of the work zone. Do not ask residents to move barriers or cross an unfinished opening to regain access. If the plan depends on using the same stairs for continuous loading and household movement, resolve that conflict before booking.
Have a fallback before the first removal
Decide what change would require temporary relocation: loss of the agreed facilities, a revised work boundary or an unexpected condition needing assessment. Name the person who informs the household and how access will be managed while a decision is made.
The basement scope guide helps define what leaves; this living-arrangement review tests the retained home around it. Avoid treating a partial gut as automatically compatible with occupancy or a full gut as a fixed-duration absence.
Discuss this scope with CoreCut
