Before removing a fence between properties, agree the exact extent of work and the arrangements while the boundary is open. The contractor needs a clear instruction; it should not be asked to settle a disagreement about ownership or the property line.

Identify the boundary before marking removals

Use the available property information and obtain appropriate advice if the location or ownership is disputed. An existing fence, hedge or maintenance pattern does not by itself resolve every boundary question. Keep disputed sections out of the removal instruction until the parties have a settled direction.

Once the extent is agreed, mark the panels, posts and footings separately. Identify gates, attached planting or features that belong to a different scope. A shared sketch can be more useful than two descriptions of “the back fence” from opposite sides.

Agree access and the temporary condition

Record where workers may enter, where material can be staged and which surfaces must be protected on each property. Permission to remove a panel is not automatically permission to cross the neighbouring yard or store rubble there. Name one contact on each side for changes.

Plan for pets, children and any pool enclosure before the fence is opened. Have the owner confirm applicable enclosure requirements and the replacement arrangement. A temporary barrier should be part of the approved site plan, not a makeshift assumption left until removal day.

Connect removal to the replacement booking

Identify who supplies the new fence, who receives the cleared line and how gaps between visits are managed. State whether old concrete footings leave, remain for review or are outside the removal scope. Record the agreed condition of holes and disturbed ground.

Keep the parties' written direction with the scope, including any section that must stay. The local permit guide addresses a different question: approvals. Neither that guide nor a demolition quote establishes property ownership or resolves a neighbour dispute.
