Deck debris is not one uniform wood stream. Treated framing, painted boards, metal fittings and items proposed for reuse should be identified before they are loaded together.

Describe the material without guessing its treatment

Use known product records or reliable identification where available. Weathering and colour alone may not establish how timber was treated. Record unknown boards as unknown and tell the hauler about coatings, attached hardware and other material in the load.

Health Canada advises never burning treated wood, indoors or outdoors. Do not offer unidentified deck timber as firewood or assume that old material is untreated. The Health Canada guidance is a starting reference, not approval for a particular reuse or disposal route.

Keep a proposed recovery separate from waste

If an owner wants boards retained, identify the recipient and intended use before removal. The recipient must decide whether the condition and material are suitable. Do not count damaged, coated or unidentified timber as a guaranteed reusable quantity.

Agree a storage point and a collection responsibility so retained pieces do not obstruct loading or get mixed into disposal material. Nails, fasteners and attached fittings also affect handling. Leave the removal method to the contractor rather than asking occupants to sort unstable or sharp debris themselves.

Confirm the destination for the actual load

Ask the receiving facility or hauler about treated wood, painted wood, mixed material and any size or vehicle restrictions. A facility that accepts clean wood may handle other timber differently. Keep the confirmation with the job's disposal arrangements and avoid promising a recycling percentage.

This is a different question from concrete recycling. The demolition scope should state how the known material streams will be handled and what happens if the removed assembly contains something not described at quotation.
