Concrete Cutting
Who closes the floor after a basement plumbing trench?
- scope decisions
- project preparation
A plumbing trench is not complete just because the concrete has been removed. The plumber, any required reviewer and the contractor reinstating the floor need an agreed handover before the opening is covered.
Name the receiving contractor before opening the floor
The basement trench guide covers layout and cutting. At the other end of that work, identify who will accept the exposed trench, install the service and close the floor. Demolition should not be priced as though it automatically includes plumbing, fill, concrete and the final floor finish.
Have the receiving contractor state the required opening and its own access needs. Record retained footings, walls and slab edges that must not be disturbed. Any change near structural elements returns to the responsible design team.
Keep the review point visible
Ask the plumber and project lead what must be checked before concealment and whether an inspection is required for the permitted work. Record the person who releases the next stage. A pipe being in place does not establish that it has been accepted or that the trench can be filled.
The temporary condition also needs an owner: who keeps the area separated, who manages access and who responds if water or an unexpected condition appears? Avoid leaving those tasks in the gap between the cutting visit and the reinstatement visit.
Describe the layers and the finished level
The floor may include a base, insulation, a moisture-control layer, concrete and a later finish. Have the responsible designer or installer specify the applicable reinstatement rather than assuming every basement has the same build-up. This guide supplies no mix, reinforcement or compaction prescription.
Agree the reference level and whether the next flooring contractor needs further preparation. Record what is included, what remains exposed and who returns to complete it. A patch that closes the trench is not necessarily a finished floor or evidence that concealed services were inspected.

Discuss slab sawing and request an estimate with the plumber’s layout and the name of the contractor responsible for closing the floor.
