Slab Sawing in Mississauga

Slab sawing uses a flat saw to define straight lines in concrete floors, driveways and slabs-on-grade.

CoreCut plans and performs these cuts across Mississauga and the western GTA for renovation, utility and removal work.

Scope and fit

A trench for a new service, a pit in a shop floor or a section of driveway to be replaced all begin with a boundary. We review the line with the trade who needs the opening and check which part of the slab must stay. A defined cut helps limit damage to the adjoining concrete and gives the next contractor a legible edge.

Indoor and outdoor sites need different setups. An occupied building needs a route for equipment, protection for finishes and a plan for capturing dust or slurry. Outside, we look at drainage, access and what lies below the slab. The saw is selected for the setting and the cut, not merely for the size of the visible surface. Sawing defines the line; if the concrete also needs to be broken out and hauled away, that scope is agreed separately.

What's included

  • Review of proposed cut lines and nearby services
  • Saw selection suited to indoor or exterior access
  • Straight cuts around trenches, pits or removal sections
  • Dust and cutting-water management for the setting
  • Collection of cutting residue and work-area cleanup

Scope boundaries

A cut opening is not a finished installation. Structural design, reinforcement changes, excavation, framing and waterproofing need assigned responsibilities. Scanning and utility isolation are assessed before cutting.

Assessment and sequence

  1. 01

    Walk the slab

We review access, floor use and what concrete stays.

  2. 02

    Confirm the layout

The receiving trade marks trench, pit or joint lines.

  3. 03

    Check below

Service information and exterior utility locates are reviewed.

  4. 04

    Protect surfaces

We isolate indoor finishes or outdoor areas beside the cuts.

  5. 05

    Saw the lines

Flat cuts are made to the agreed scope with suitable containment.

  6. 06

    Clean and review

Residue is removed and the cut boundary is checked for the next stage.

Before we start

Provide the layout from the plumber, builder or installer and identify known services beneath the concrete. For exterior sawing or breaking, arrange locates through Ontario One Call before work begins.

Arrange appropriate assessment of materials that may be disturbed and confirm the applicable responsibilities before the work is agreed. See the occupied-building survey guide.

Related concrete work

  • Indoor slab saw-cut into a grid with cut blocks lifted and stacked beside the opening
  • Poured concrete foundation wall with saw-cut sections removed and cut blocks lying beside a patio

Frequently asked questions

Is slab sawing the same as removing the floor?

No. Sawing establishes the boundary or joint. Breaking, lifting and hauling the material inside that boundary are separate operations and can be included if the scope calls for them. At the site walk we clarify whether you need cut lines only or a cleared trench or pit for the following trade.

Can a floor be cut while the rest of the building is occupied?

It depends on the access, building operation and ability to isolate the area. We review routes for people and materials, dust barriers, cutting-water collection and the timing of noisy work. The work zone needs to be kept apart from normal traffic until the saw and any opened floor are made safe.

How are straight edges kept beside an existing driveway?

We mark the line that is meant to remain and saw it before the unwanted section is broken out. This creates a defined edge rather than letting impact fracture the neighbouring slab. The condition of the existing concrete still matters, so we inspect it before agreeing on the removal boundary.

How do you choose between wet and dry cutting?

The surroundings and the ability to contain the by-products guide that choice. Wet cutting controls airborne dust but creates slurry that must be collected. Other setups require their own dust-control measures. We plan the method around the building, access and finishes rather than allowing either dust or water to spread unchecked.
