Concrete roof openings for building-service upgrades

By CoreCut Demolition

  • Concrete scope
  • Trade coordination

A new service opening through a concrete roof affects more than the concrete. The project also needs a reviewed structural detail, a roofing interface and a condition that protects the building before permanent closure. Establish those responsibilities before arranging the cut.

CoreCut assesses core drilling or a defined concrete-cutting package in suitable assemblies. Roof access, support, roofing installation and specialist handling are assessed or assigned separately; this is not an offer to cut every roof type.

Start with a section through the assembly

The designer and roofing contractor should identify the concrete, the layers above it and the receiving installation. Show the room below as well. A roof-plan circle alone does not explain what the cut passes through or what occupies the space underneath.

This is a responsibility diagram, not a roof detail. The project professionals supply the actual assembly and method requirements.

Compare a penetration with a larger opening

A small designed service penetration may call for coring. A larger equipment opening can require a different cutting, support and handling plan. Neither can be assessed from opening size alone; the retained structure, access and installation also matter.

Use the penetration-interface guide for the sizing and closure questions. If the proposal removes a larger roof assembly rather than making a local aperture, the roof-structure guide addresses that different boundary.

Plan the interval before the new installation

Identify who controls the exposed opening and who provides temporary and permanent protection. The programme must connect concrete work to the roofer and receiving installer. A completed cut is not a watertight roof or a commissioned service.

Describe how people and removed material reach the location. Roof height and access restrictions are assessment inputs, not evidence that a particular lifting arrangement is available. Do not book a cutting package around an unconfirmed handling assumption.

Make the enquiry about the designed opening

An illustrative upgrade could retain the roof assembly while adding one specified penetration; another could create a larger reviewed opening for equipment. Each needs its own receiving detail and closure plan.

Ask CoreCut to assess the concrete portion with the roof-section information, design contact, proposed opening and roofing contractor identified. Include unresolved access or support questions before confirming the work arrangement.
