Retaining Wall Removal in Mississauga
A retaining wall holds soil at a change in grade, so taking it out requires a plan for the ground it supports.
CoreCut removes scoped concrete, block and timber walls across Mississauga and the western GTA once the replacement or temporary support sequence is clear.
Scope and fit
The visible face is only part of the wall's job. It may hold back a garden, a driveway or soil near a building, and it may channel water through drainage behind it. We review what is above and below the wall, whether access allows removal without loading the retained side and where the soil will go once the structure is opened.
A temporary slope or a new wall may need to be in place before old sections come out. Where a wall supports a structure or a substantial grade change, an engineer should direct that sequence. Drainage cannot simply disappear with the old wall; the owner and designer need to decide how water will be handled afterward. We separate and load the scoped wall material, protect adjoining surfaces and leave the ground to the agreed handoff condition rather than presenting demolition as a finished grading design.
What's included
- Review of retained ground, access and neighbouring structures
- Coordination with the replacement-wall or grading plan
- Controlled dismantling of concrete, block or timber sections
- Loading and hauling of the removed wall material
- Cleanup to the agreed site condition
Scope boundaries
New concrete, plumbing work and a finished replacement surface are separate from removal. Unknown embedded services or suspect materials need assessment before disturbance.
Assessment and sequence
- 01
Inspect the grades
We look at the soil and structures on each side of the wall.
- 02
Confirm the sequence
The designer's plan for support and drainage is reviewed.
- 03
Check the ground
Ontario One Call locates are confirmed before exterior breaking or excavation.
- 04
Protect adjacent areas
Nearby paving, planting and access routes are marked.
- 05
Remove in stages
Wall sections come out in the supported order.
- 06
Clear and hand over
Material is hauled and exposed ground is left as agreed.
Before we start
Have a plan for the retained soil, the new wall or temporary slope, and the drainage that the old wall managed. Arrange an engineer's direction if a structure or major change in grade depends on the wall. Exterior locates through Ontario One Call come before digging.
Arrange appropriate assessment of materials that may be disturbed and confirm the applicable responsibilities before the work is agreed. see the survey guide.
Frequently asked questions
Can a retaining wall be taken out without replacing it?
Only if the ground behind it can be left stable under the proposed final layout. That is a design question, not something to decide by pulling a section and watching the soil. We review the owner's grading or replacement plan and coordinate removal with the person responsible for the retained ground.
When should an engineer review the removal?
An engineer is appropriate when the wall supports a structure or a significant change in grade, or where a temporary support sequence is needed. The engineer decides how the ground will remain stable while sections are removed. We carry out the demolition to that sequence instead of treating the wall as ordinary rubble.
What happens to drainage behind the old wall?
Water may be directed by drainage material or outlets hidden behind the wall. Before removal, the owner and replacement designer should decide where that water will go afterward. During demolition we can expose and document what is found, but a new drainage solution must be part of the following work.
Do you remove timber walls too?
Yes, if the scope calls for timber as well as concrete or block. Posts and buried components may extend beyond the visible face, so we check the extent during the site walk and revise the plan if concealed pieces appear. Material is sorted for appropriate hauling rather than mixed with clean concrete.
