Basement Walkout and Egress Window Openings in Mississauga
A basement walkout or egress window opening changes a foundation wall to create access or a larger basement window.
CoreCut cuts approved openings across Mississauga and the western GTA, coordinating with the designer and the trades finishing the opening.
Scope and fit
These projects may serve a walkout, an egress window or an enlarged window for a basement apartment. The cut itself is only one stage. Exterior excavation, the wall's load path, the new support, drainage and waterproofing all affect how the work is sequenced. We review the drawings and both sides of the foundation so that material can come out without harming the wall that stays.
Poured concrete and block behave differently as sections are separated. We agree on cut lines and the route for hauling pieces before equipment is set up. A window or door contractor confirms the required opening, while other trades take responsibility for framing, support, excavation and weatherproofing as agreed. The work area inside the house is protected and cutting water is kept from travelling into finished rooms.
What's included
- Site review of interior and exterior access
- Coordination against the engineer's opening detail
- Sawing of the approved foundation opening
- Controlled handling and removal of cut wall sections
- Cutting-water containment and cleanup
Scope boundaries
A cut opening is not a finished installation. Structural design, reinforcement changes, excavation, framing and waterproofing need assigned responsibilities. Scanning and utility isolation are assessed before cutting.
Assessment and sequence
- 01
Walk both sides
We review excavation access, indoor finishes and debris routes.
- 02
Verify the design
The drawing and installer layout set the opening and support sequence.
- 03
Coordinate readiness
We confirm the permit, excavation and temporary protection.
- 04
Protect the house
Occupied rooms are separated from the cutting area.
- 05
Cut and remove
The opening is sawed and sections are supported as they come free.
- 06
Hand over
Debris is cleared so the next trades can frame and waterproof.
Before we start
For a structural foundation opening, the engineer's drawings and a City of Mississauga permit must be in place before cutting; consult the permit guide.
Have the excavation and receiving installer coordinated and arrange Ontario One Call locates before exterior excavation or breaking. Arrange appropriate assessment of materials that may be disturbed and confirm the applicable responsibilities before the work is agreed.

Frequently asked questions
Can a poured foundation be cut for a walkout?
A designed opening can be cut in a poured wall after the engineer has addressed support and the City approval is in place. The excavation and the method of handling wall sections matter as much as the saw line. We follow the approved detail and coordinate with the contractor handling the support and exterior work.
Is an enlarged basement window treated differently from a new door?
Both alter the foundation, although their installation and exterior conditions differ. The designer and window or door installer specify the finished opening and required support. We do not assume that a smaller cut is automatically exempt from review. The City of Mississauga Building Division confirms permit requirements for the proposed work.
Who handles the window well or exterior drainage?
Those items need an assigned trade and an agreed scope before cutting begins. We can coordinate the opening with the excavation and installation sequence, but a saw-cut wall by itself is not a finished, weatherproof assembly. At the site walk we identify who is handling drainage, the window well and final waterproofing.
Can the basement remain occupied during the cut?
That depends on the room layout and how the exterior opening can be secured. We protect adjacent areas and contain cutting water, but the wall will be open until subsequent trades complete their work. The owner and general contractor need a plan for access, weather and safe separation from occupied rooms.
